Remarks
A raster that anti-aliases tends to render the thin stems of small text lighter than the designer meant; this is Adobe’s CFF engine’s compensation for that (FreeType calls it stem darkening and leaves it off by default, as this does). How much a stem is thickened depends on how thick it is on the pixel grid: the thinnest stems gain the most, and a stem more than about two and a third pixels wide, which is what a stem is at a large size, gains nothing. It applies only to a font with CFF outlines that is grid-fitted, so it is ignored for a TrueType font and for None, and it does not change the advance.
